let's talk about suicide prevention.
it's a serious topic. there are about 18 million people in the united states alone that are suffering from depression. that is a giant number. untreated, it can lead to suicide. that is the third leading cause of death for teenagers.
every forty seconds, a person dies from suicide. so if this blog takes you six minutes to read by the time you are done about nine people will have died.
suicide is preventable. depression is treatable.
if someone you know seems to be suffering from it, try to get them to seek help. if someone is acting like they could be considering suicide--even jokingly--take it seriously. ask them to get help or try to have an intervention. later on they will thank you for it.
signs could be but are not limited to:
- threatening to hurt or kill him or herself, or talking of wanting to hurt or kill him/herself
- looking for ways to kill him/herself by seeking access to firearms, available pills, or other means
- talking or writing about death, dying or suicide, when these actions are out of the ordinary
- increased substance (alcohol or drug) use
- no reason for living; no sense of purpose in life
- anxiety, agitation, unable to sleep or sleeping all the time
- feeling trapped - like there’s no way out
- hopelessness
- withdrawal from friends, family and society
- rage, uncontrolled anger, seeking revenge
- acting reckless or engaging in risky activities, seemingly without thinking
- dramatic mood changes

suicide is very preventable, but too many people don't seek the help that they need and hurt the people that love them by ending their own life. do not continue to sit by while this happens. be active. help prevent suicide.
